Thecouplingbetweenlatticeandchargedegreesoffreedomincondensedmattermaterialsisubiquitous andcanoftenresultininterestingpropertiesandorderedphases,includingconventionalsuperconductivity, chargedensitywaveorder,andmetal-insulatortransitions.Angle-resolvedphotoemissionspectroscopyand bothneutronandnon-resonantx-rayscatteringserveaseffectiveprobesfordeterminingthebehaviorofap- propriate,individualdegreesoffreedomtheelectronicstructureandlatticeexcitation,orphonondispersion, respectively.However,eachprovideslessdirectinformationaboutthemutualcouplingbetweenthedegreesof freedom,usualthroughself-energyeffects,whichtendtorenormalizeandbroadenspectralfeaturesprecisely wherethecouplingisstrong,impactingonesabilitytoquantitivelycharacterizethecoupling.Herewedemon- stratethatresonantinelasticx-rayscattering,orRIXS,canbeaneffectivetooltodirectlydeterminetherelative strengthandmomentumdependenceoftheelectron-phononcouplingincondensedmattersystems.Usinga diagrammaticapproachforan8-bandmodelofcopperoxides,westudythecontributionsfromthelowestorder diagramstothefullRIXSintensityforarealisticscatteringgeometry,accountingformatrixelementeffects inthescatteringcross-sectionaswellasthemomentumdependenceoftheelectron-phononcouplingvertex. Adetailedexaminationofthesemapsoffersauniqueperspectiveintothecharacteristicsofelectron-phonon coupling,whichcomplementsbothneutronandnon-resonantx-rayscattering,aswellasRamanandinfrared conductivity.
