Shaft Seal Systems of Rotary Equipment in Cryogenic Plants
Pflueckhahn, Dirk.
Shaft seals on rotary machinery as compressors, oil pumps and vacuum pumps are widely used at cryogenic plants. Shaft seals problems are known as one of the most common cause of failure and require high maintenance efforts. Failures lead to losses of oil, cause pollution of the machinery and the surrounding environment and are also a health risk for staff. In sub atmospheric systems a shaft seal leakage can cause severe damage on the cryogenic plant due to air in leakage into the process.

In this presentation an overview about different rotational shaft sealing systems is shown. A brief technical description of most common used systems is given in this presentation as well as some general recommendations and hints concerning the system design, maintenance and operation.
