In this paper we derive the cooling rate for the Microbunched Electron Cooling (MBEC) system proposed by D. Ratner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 084802 (2013)]. In this paper we derive the cooling rate for the Microbunched Electron Cooling (MBEC) system proposed by D. Ratner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 084802 (2013)]. A simple one-dimensional model is used for the hadron-electron interaction in the modulator and the kicker with point charges replaced by infinitely thin sheets with a Gaussian charge distribution in the transverse direction. Our treatment is based on the analysis of the longitudinal fluctuations, and associated fluctuational longitudinal electric field, in both beams when they interact and then pass through the dispersive sections of the cooling system. In addition to the cooling rate, we also derive the energy diffusion due to the random fields of the shot noise in the electron beam. Show Partial Abstract
