Computational Physics Support Specialist
The High Energy Physics Group at the University of Victoria in Victoria,
B.C., Canada has an opening for a Computational Physics Support
Specialist to work on state-of-the-art problems in high-performance
computing. The position will be based in Victoria and will support
researchers on the BaBar Experiment based at the Stanford Linear
Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California. The BaBar Experiment is
operated by a collaboration of 600 researchers from the US, Europe and
Canada. The primary goal of the experiment is to understand the
asymmetry between matter and antimatter.
The candidate will be responsible for supporting and managing
high-energy physics application software for the entire BaBar
Collaboration. The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in
physics. The position requires extensive knowledge of the Linux
operating system as well as languages such as C++ and scripting
languages such as Python. Experience with the analysis techniques used
in high-energy physics experiments and familiarity with Grid computing
tools would be an asset. Good communication and interpersonal skills are
essential, as is the ability to work in a team environment involving
researchers from around the world. The position may involve a limited
amount of travel to SLAC.
The Canadian team on the BaBar Experiment includes faculty, research
associates and graduate students at McGill University, Universite de
Montreal, UBC in Vancouver and the University of Victoria. The group has
access to high performance computing clusters and peta-scale storage
facilities across Canada. These facilities serve as the Canadian
contribution to the internationally-distributed computing resources used
by the BaBar Collaboration.
This position is for a period of two years. Further annual renewals may
be possible by mutual agreement. All qualified applicants are encouraged
to submit their application electronically to lcharron@uvic.ca and to
