This is a four day hands-on tutorial course based on Geant4 version 10.1-patch01 hosted by Laboratory for Nuclear Security and Policy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It will cover all the application domains including high energy and nuclear physics, astrophysics and space engineering, medical applications and newly arising material science.
The lectures will cover all aspects of the toolkit of Geant4 version 10.1-patch01 from basic installation through advanced topics including multithreading, and will be interspersed with hands-on sessions that build a progressively more complex application extensible to real use.
The course should be of interest both to complete novices and to those who already have some basic familiarity with Geant4. Participants are expected to have a reasonable knowledge of C++ and Linux.
The tutorial starts in the afternoon of May 26th (Tuesday) and runs through the afternoon of May 29th (Friday) with additional discussion time for selected topics in the morning of May 30th (Saturday). The detailed agenda is here. Tutorial slides and hands-on instructions will be linked to the agenda by the start of the tutorial.
Participant should bring a Geant4-capable laptop with a wireless internet connection. Tutorial organizers will not offer any computers for tutorial participants. Supported systems and C++ compilers are listed here.
If you plan to bring a Windows laptop, please preinstall a Linux virtual machine. We will not support Windows in this tutorial.
Though we will briefly cover the installation of Geant4 and related libraries on the first day of the tutorial, we strongly encourage/recommend the participants to install Geant4 version 10.1-patch01 in advance of the tutorial. Geant4 version 10.1-patch01 could be downloaded from this site, and full instruction of installing Geant4 version 10.1-patch01 is linked here. Please make sure to install your Geant4 in Multithreaded mode. If you have installed an older version of Geant4 or sequential mode of 10.1-patch01, please make sure to update your installation to the multithreaded mode of the latest version.
If you have questions about whether your laptop is appropriate, or problems about installing Geant4, see the Geant4 Installation Guide, and/or the Geant4 Installation and Configuration Discussion Forum.
The capacity is limited to 60 on a first-come-first-served basis. - Registration has become full, but we still accept waiting-list registration. Please follow this link.
