Geant 4 at SLAC

Geant4 Advanced-level Tutorial 2015
@ Massachusetts Institute of Technology

W20-201 West Lounge, Stratton Student Center
October 19th-21st, 2015

This is a three-day advanced-level hands-on tutorial course arranged for those who are already familiar with the Geant4 simulation toolkit and who have detailed questions / difficulties about their simulation applications. Lectures and hands-on exercises will cover topics picked up from such questions and difficulties. We will cover all the application domains including high energy and nuclear physics, astrophysics and space engineering, medical applications and newly arising material science. Lectures also include some updates in recent releases, so that this course should be of interest to the users of older versions of Geant4, in particular who want to convert their applications to Geant4 version 10 series.

This course is not suitable for those who are new to, or have little experience in Geant4. A regular Geant4 tutorial course for beginners will be scheduled at another time.

This event is hosted by MIT's Laboratory for Nuclear Security and Policy (LNSP) in collaboration with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

The tutorial starts in the Morning of October 19th (Monday) and runs through the noon of October 21st (Wednesday) with additional discussion time for selected topics in the afternoon of 21st if needed. The detailed agenda will be linked here as soon as it gets ready. Tutorial slides and hands-on instructions will be linked to the agenda by the start of the tutorial.

Laptop Required

Participant should bring a Geant4-capable laptop with a wireless internet connection. Tutorial organizers will not offer any computers for tutorial participants. Supported systems and C++ compilers are listed here.

If you plan to bring a Windows laptop, please preinstall a Linux virtual machine. We will not support Windows in this tutorial.

Though we will briefly cover the installation of Geant4 and related libraries on the first day of the tutorial, we strongly encourage/recommend the participants to install Geant4 version 10.1-patch02 in advance of the tutorial. Geant4 version 10.1-patch02 could be downloaded from this site, and full instruction of installing Geant4 version 10.1-patch02 is linked here. Please make sure to install your Geant4 in Multithreaded mode. If you have installed an older version of Geant4 or sequential mode of 10.1-patch02, please make sure to update your installation to the multithreaded mode of the latest version.

If you have questions about whether your laptop is appropriate, or problems about installing Geant4, see the Geant4 Installation Guide, and/or the Geant4 Installation and Configuration Discussion Forum.

The capacity is limited to 30. Please fill the application form. Given this course is meant for experienced users, we will use provided information to check eligibility. Once your application is accepted, you will receive an invitation email with detailed information about the registration / payment method.
