Job Title:Mechanical Engineer
Directorate:P00000 - Particle Physics and Astro
Percent Time:100%
Duration:Continuing
Open To:All

Responsibilities

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a proposed electron-positron collider that will complement the European Large Hadron Collider in unlocking some of the deepest mysteries in the universe. (see http://www.linearcollider.org/cms/?pid=1000000 for description.) SLAC is leading the design effort for the Electron Source, RF Power Sources and Beam Delivery System of the ILC. The Interaction Region (IR) houses the detector which tracks and analyzes these particles as well as the beamlines which deliver the incoming beams to the detector and then extract uncollided beams to dumps which absorb their massive power (18 MW). SLAC¿s Linear Collider department seeks a senior Mechanical Engineer to manage the integration of systems associated with the IR: final focus beamlines, the detector, extraction lines and high power beam dumps and collimators. The ME will also participate in R&D related to development of the final design of components, such as the beam dump windows. In the near term, the ME will work with physicists, engineers and designers to: ensure conformance of component specs with physics requirements; lay out components and major subsystems to ensure fit and avoid interferences; estimate IR cost using numbers provided by component technical specialists; manage interfaces with electrical, RF, cooling, instrumentation and other subsystems; manage design changes. After project approval, the ME would also: plan installation; manage procurement, inspection, installation and commissioning of hardware; maintain schedule throughout project from design to commissioning; supervise the work of engineers, technicians and designers; document results in written reports and oral presentations as appropriate

Required Skills

MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and several years of project engineering experience on tasks like those described above, preferably in high energy physics applications involving high power electron beams, final focus beamline design and detector design. Applicants must be proficient at verbal and written communication and be able to show success at planning and executing projects on time and within budget. Desired: PhD degree. Analytical capability in areas of stress and heat transfer. Familiarity with superconducting electromagnet design, cryogenic systems, ultra high vacuum technology, radiation shielding, or high powered beam energy absorbing devices (dumps and collimators).

Please note: Hires at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are subject to Department of Energy approval, and are required to complete Environmental Safety & Health training.

Beginning September 8, 2009, SLAC is required to confirm all new employees through the E-Verify Program.
