Responsibilities

The Klystron and Microwave Department represents a core competency of SLAC. Its reputation for quality and innovative work is known throughout the world. SLAC is seeking a new Department Head to provide visionary leadership for the department that meets the changing science mission and the challenges of improving the management and operations. This department is responsible for Klystron Manufacturing and Testing, Microwave Tube R&D, Microwave Engineering, supporting Electronics and Fast Pulsed Modulator Development. The successful candidate will be responsible for a 60-person department that includes researchers, engineers, technicians, a unique manufacturing facility, and high power microwave and accelerator test facilities. They will interact with a variety of other research divisions and departments at the laboratory to support and guide the development of RF sources, ultra-high power RF components, accelerator structures, and support facilities. They will plan the short and long range programs to supply the immediate need for klystrons, high power microwave components, and microwave engineering requirements for the SLAC accelerators and storage rings, as well as guide the program to develop suitable microwave power sources for the next generation of linear accelerators. They will direct manpower and budget planning. They will also be responsible for ES&H functions of the department and for setting high standards for work safety and practices. Responsibilities: Management of the department consistent with SLAC and Stanford University's policies and procedural requirements. Pre-planning and preparation of department, directorate, and programmatic strategic plans. Collaboration with other SLAC Departments and programs to guide the development of RF systems. This includes RF systems for LCLS, ILC, future linear colliders and future light sources. Development of novel RF sources for future machines. Collaboration with other national labs, universities and international facilities on novel RF sources and systems, and RF accelerators. Engineering and production of a variety of rf vacuum electronic devices such as accelerator structures and high power rf components to support SLAC programs. Production of 5045 klystrons and sub-boosters for the SLAC linac, including RF testing. Engineering and maintenance of the high-level and low-level RF for the SLAC linac, PEP-II storage rings, and SPEAR3 machines. This equipment must operate 24/7 with minimum downtime and maximum availability. Leadership in ES&H for the department, setting high standards in consideration of the unusual mix of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, extremely high voltage, and hoisting and rigging hazards in the department.

Required Skills

Required: PhD or MS in Physics/Engineering and experience closely related to above responsibilities. Demonstrated administrative and management experience. Leadership experience including the ability to lead research and development programs and the ability to manage resources for a wide variety of diverse projects. Demonstrated experience in microwave vacuum electronics and development of related systems. Excellent record of professional achievements including recognized publications. Desired: Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, and experience with securing external funds. Familiarity with SLAC organization, culture, staff, operations, and procedures.
