Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer/Computing Division Director, the position will ensure that the technical and scientific computing capabilities are maintained at an appropriate level as well as advise and embrace emerging and cutting edge technologies that directly support SLAC¿s mission of providing world-class scientific research and development.
The incumbent will directly manage a staff of scientifically-focused computer programmers, application developers, project managers, and computer systems engineers. He/she will negotiate service level agreements (SLA¿s) with the Directorates and have responsibility for matrixing with the OCIO core-services organization to insure that the SLA objectives are achieved.
The incumbent will use strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with others in frequent interaction with the Associate Lab Directors, senior lab management, and key stakeholders in the Lab¿s Directorates and the Office of the CIO (OCIO). The incumbent will also use strong managerial skills, including the ability to effectively plan, direct, and control a budget as well as organize, staff, and allocate finite resources in the performance of responsibilities. The position will be an active member of Stanford¿s computing community and will also sit as a key member of the SLAC Scientific Computing Advisory Council and be a member of the OCIO senior IT leadership team. He/she will represent the lab at external scientific computing symposia, Department of Energy, and peer councils, as appropriate. He/she will participate in the development of a multi-program scientific computing strategy and plan to enable scientific discovery.
Required Skills
Required: Advanced degree (MS or higher) in physics or chemistry and experience with large-scale computer system application design and deployments. An established track record managing large teams and multi-organizational project teams. Significant managerial experience related to the functions of this job described above. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others at all organizational levels. Experience dealing with grants and academic institutions/government agencies.
Desired: experience with massive parallel-processing systems is a major plus. Experience managing complex budgets is strongly preferred.
