Responsibilities
As the Assistant ES&H Coordinator in the Mechanical Fabrication Department (MFD), your mission is to drive the implementation and refinement of our safety initiatives at the department level and be a motivating force in the continuous improvement of our Environment, Safety and Health performance. This is a "hands-on" position and much of the time will be spent in the field in an environment where safety is a key indicator for the performance of the department. While the safety culture is already strong in MFD, new initiatives focus on continuous improvement and will require an aggressive commitment from our safety team to drive change.
This roll is challenging and dynamic. Rather than acting as a consultant you must rely on your ability to act as a department team member and motivate the staff with hands-on coaching, support, guidance and problem solving. You must be able to balance priorities and quickly find solutions.
Primary functions of the assistant ES&H Coordinator: Plays key role in the development and administration of MFD safety programs and partners with the supervisors and workers to integrate ES&H requirements into daily operations; Maintains knowledge and familiarity with relevant ES&H policies and regulations, keeps informed of changes and develops implementation strategies for changes that impact the department; Support MFD staff in environmental, health and safety areas including accident reduction, confined space entrances, control of hazardous energy, hoisting and rigging, fall protection and hazardous materials; Assists MFD staff with hazard identification, analysis, control development and implementation (Work Planning and Control); Observes work in progress, ensures that proper safety equipment is worn and procedures are followed; Monitors and evaluates operations, programs and process for ES&H quality and effectiveness; makes recommendations for improvements; Provides support for safety issue corrective action tracking and resolution; Serves on committees and other safety teams to influence the corporate policies developed for the site; Assists with preparation and review of safety documentation and reports; May serve as Building Manager or Assistant Building Manager for some MFD buildings and performs associated functions.
Required Skills
BS in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Program or related field or combination of education, training and experience is required. Several years of professional hands-on ES&H related experience is required especially in areas of accident reduction, confined space, LOTO, hoisting and rigging, fall protection and hazardous materials. Demonstrated ability to take initiative in areas of responsibility. Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member. Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and generate solutions. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally. Demonstrated proficiency with standard office computer programs (e.g. MS Office Suite). Must be able to track and interpret regulatory requirements, determine the impact to the department and successfully transmit the intent of requirements to department personnel. Desired: Experience developing and implementing safety programs, knowledge of SLAC or other DOE laboratories environments and professional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional and Certified Environmental Professional.
