Responsibilities

Reporting to the Publishing Services Manager, the Publishing Specialist is responsible for performing the compliance work associated with SLAC's scientific and technical information (STI) documents, as well as publishing-related projects in print and digital formats. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Coordinating and providing quality assurance for the day-to-day operations of the SciDoc Scientific Document Repository, including collecting, logging, converting, publishing, and reporting SLAC's scientific and technology (STI) documents; Providing technical support to authors using Microsoft publishing software tools, to include one-on-one support with individual issues; Building templates and training tools to assist authors with their publishing needs; Assisting clients in determining cost effective solutions for their publishing needs including print and electronic media, and based on DOE contract rules; Performing simple to complex formatting and limited editing on special publication projects such as proposals, white papers, and conference abstract and proceedings documents; Updating and maintaining the various databases and servers required for tracking, publishing, and providing internal and external access to SLAC¿s publication products; Tracking workflow and expenditures related to the printing, distribution, and journal vendor contracts associated with SLAC¿s publishing efforts; Assisting in development and maintenance of a department style guide using Standard English grammar rules and best practices to ensure scientific, technical, and business process data is appropriate for translation into web, print, and electronic formats; Performing outreach to authors and groups to educate them on SLAC's publication process and DOE contract rules; Performing administrative tasks as needed, including but not limited to the hardcopy and electronic dissemination of the research publications, data entry, purchasing, budget tracking, copying, and timecards. This position involves working with a wide variety of people, providing excellent customer service, and taking initiative to resolve problems that may arise

Required Skills

BA in English, communication, or technical writing and at least several years experience in scientific or technical communication, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience building and using efficient publishing techniques such as style guides, templates, and document plans is required. Demonstrated writing and formatting skills with strong knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation required. Ability to work with people across disciplines - scientific, technical, and administrative - and to work with people who have diverse communication styles. Ability to analyze problems and make recommendations based on effective publishing solutions and client requirements. Experience establishing priorities and multi-tasking while meeting deadlines. Experience taking initiative under areas of responsibility and performing active problem-solving, whether it involves asking others or making suggestions and seeing problems through to completion. Ability to work as part of a team in developing workflow processes and procedures. Experience providing excellent customer services and ability to anticipate the needs of the group and help others on the team as projects require. Must be reliable, and have the ability to work independently and learn quickly. Computer proficiency and demonstrated competence in the following software programs: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Distiller, FrameMaker, Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft FrontPage or equivalent, Microsoft Outlook, FileMaker or other database program or system. Other desired qualification: Familiarity with laboratory and University environment. Knowledge of Pitstop or LaTex a plus.


Please note: Hires at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are subject to Department of Energy approval, and are required to complete Environmental Safety & Health training.
