SLAC has performed a design study in collaboration with CERN to determine the maximum efficiency that can be achieved in a 50 MW, short pulse (~1 usec), 12 GHz klystron. The design approach was based on recently developed beam bunching techniques for modification of bunch core oscillation lengths through appropriate rf cavity design.
